The sun is about to set, and you’re still sitting on that same bench in the middle of the park, listening to your favorite songs for hours now. You’re trying your best to ease your boredom as you stare at your watch, counting every tick of time. Moments later and there you have it! It’s past six. As the wind blows in the cold of the night, you’re still waiting…

Who would love the idea of waiting? Surely, all of us have experienced waiting every once in a while. And many could attest that waiting is not always easy.

You wait for a friend in a coffee shop so you could start working on your project that’s due the next day. You’ve worked hard for weeks as you wait for payday so you’ll be ready to clear the bills when they arrive. You’ve been longing to have a spouse to partner with in this crazy adventure called life. You just can’t bear seeing your loved one suffer one more day in pain on the hospital bed. You can’t carry on with life like others do because of your disabilities and you wait for healing. Yes, you continue waiting like it’s the only thing you’ve been doing.

Waiting is definitely part of our lives. It cannot be unwritten. The ability to wait on different situations, however, requires different levels of maturity.

Waiting for ten minutes is easy, but  waiting for ten years requires a totally different attitude.

We become better at waiting when faced with greater opportunities that tests our faith. Faith, biblically speaking, means the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.( Hebrews 11: 1).

As human beings (though we may be aware of this or not), we always seek control. For most of us, we are pretty good in drawing a blueprint of what we want to happen in our lives. We may have already plotted a timeline on when each of these plans must take place. We are good in the anticipation that all of these will pass according to every detail of our design.  But when we missed one, our true character is revealed.

Waiting as you take every step closer to your deadline is easy. But what if, you’ve already reached the end of your timeline? You may still have a little allowance for some patience and consideration. You may be wise enough to have a plan B. But what comes next after you’ve given all you’ve got? You’re still waiting now. You begin to lose sight of what you anticipated. You lose control. Now, worry starts to cripple you. Your attitude starts to spoil.

The bible gives us a comforting message as we encounter these moments of waiting in life. Psalms 27:14 says,

“Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD.”

If you have already gone tired of waiting, Isaiah 40:31 says,

“they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”

Waiting only becomes really hard when we forget about the Author of time and the Maker of all things.

When we reach the point of losing sight of when God’s promise will come, the only recourse is to go back to the One who gave the promise. Do not let go of the hope that God has placed in you. Obey and rejoice as you wait, for He who promised is faithful!
